Here are some useful answers to questions on owning and taxing a Powerchair or Mobility Scooter;
Do I need to Register or Tax my Mobility Vehicle? – If you have a class 3 Mobility Vehicle, the DVLA requires you to register it with them.
What is the DVLA? – The DVLA is the UK Government’s Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency.
What is a class 3 Mobility Vehicle? – A vehicle (Scooter or Powerchair) that is between 113.5 to 150kgs in weight and can travel faster than 4mph, but no faster than 8mph. It must also be fitted with a switch, or programmed to be able to limit the maximum speed to 4mph so the vehicle can be legally and safely used on footpaths and pedestrian areas.
How to register a NEW class 3 Mobility Vehicle – Most new vehicles will arrive from the manufacturer with the paperwork you need to register them – this is often found in the box with the charger. This form is called a V55/4. If your vehicle does not arrive with this paperwork or if you misplace it, you can obtain another copy which can be ordered for FREE from the DVLA by clicking here. How to register a USED class 3 Mobility Scooter – You may need to complete a V55/5 if the used vehicle you are buying has not previously been registered. Do I need a number plate? – When you register with the DVLA you will be given a registration number in the same way as registering a car. However, unlike a car there is currently no legal requirement to display a number plate.
Do I have to display the TAX disc – No, since 1 October 2014 you no longer need to display a paper tax disc on a vehicle.
How much will the TAX cost? – Road TAX for class 3 Mobility Vehicles is currently FREE.
Should I have insurance? – Although it is not a legal requirement, it is strongly advised to have insurance. Suitable schemes are not too expensive and are available to cover your personal safety, other people’s safety and the value of the vehicle.
